Strangely enough, they have a mind to till the soil, and the love of possessions is a disease in them. These people have made many rules that the rich may break, but the poor may not! They have a religion in which the poor worship, but the rich will not! They even take tithes of the poor and weak to support the rich and those who rule. They claim this mother of ours, the Earth, for their own use, and fence their neighbors away from her, and deface her with their buildings and their refuse. They compel her to produce out of season, and when sterile she is made to take medicine in order to produce again. All this is sacrilege." I am in the company of Creator, who takes pity on me and grants me the Circle of many who share my Prayers and seek much the same vision. Alone I am but one and my vision reaches only to the next hill. But I am not alone. My voice reaches others beyond the hill and they speak to me of the things they see. Together we see far, and when our vision still is too short Creator enters our hearts and shows us what lies beyond. This is the way. We can never be alone as long as we trust the gifts we were granted, and remember there is but one, true, great power. UUCP email Do Savages have Souls "When the hearts of the women lay on the ground the Nations shall Perish." Honorable Cheyenne Nation... +stands at the councilfire and asked permission to speak...it is granted. Approaches the fire with tobacco and sage offerings, walks backwards counterclockwise around the fire in humbled remembrance of all the betrayals of First Nations* I come before this circle and council today with a heart full of messages and ask your forgiveness as this humble Tsalagi Woman speaks of many things which she has been told during this journey. Yesterday....I walked upon sacred grounds. I walked among the graves of hundreds of my People...your People...our First Nations People from many tribes...our own....and many now forgotten and extinct. I walked acres and acres among piled rocks left there by loved ones who buried their hearts with those who left them. I climbed ravines...sometimes almost hand over foot...had clothing torn by bushes...stumbled...and with joyous heart walked into....the Valley of The Children. Yesterday....three Tsalagi Women of heart...defied court orders...and walked among our People in honor. Yesterday three Cherokee Women walked among the Ancestors and filmed...with love...our People's story... We had spoken, the other two women of honor and myself..about the risks involved should be film....and each of us agreed it did not matter....That this story had to be seen....told....and it is with this purpose that I come to you today and ask you to hear my heart. I....of the Tsalagi Nation ask you to go back in the past to understand the future... Our Beloved Woman, Nancy Ward, who believed in the goodness of others,in the 1700's saw starving soldiers and took them Cherokee Cattle to keep them alive. Four days later the soldiers attacked and burned our holy Capital. Nancy was taken prisoner and kept in Virginia for 19 months. She returned, never to see her loved town again...and her spirit was never of the same light. On May 24, 1838, our People, who lived in harmony and peace were taken at gunpoint, rounded up as cattle and herded into stockades in Georgia...Pens so small that small children had to sleep on top of their parents..No sanitary conditions...not enough food....Hundreds died of dysentery, typhus and tetanus. This...despite that we had won the right to keep our lands in the US Supreme Court... Our lands were taken...and given away in a lottery...we lost everything...everything. In the 1890's the Cheyenne and Sioux People were attacked in their sleeps and massacred despite the fact they had committed no crime more heinous than dancing their Ghost Dance Religion. I remember a few years back...when the Tennessee Valley Authority won the right to flood our sacred lands for their dams. We begged in court to be allowed to dig up our Ancestors and move them. We had no money for shovels and picks. We literally dug them up with our bare hands. When our attorney went to court to beg for more time so we could dig up our people with our hands the Judge said it was not his problem and denied it. Our attorney stood tall and proud...and said, "Years ago we were given a prophecy..and we did not understand it then...but we do now. We were told that our dead would look upon Creators face through a sea of glass." NOW we understand it...FLOOD IT! FLOOD IT! Go ahead NOW and help the prophecy be fulfilled! FLOOD IT!!!"I was always proud of the fire of those words. I remember a friends story of how, in the 1920's, her family, who lived in a small log cabin in the Smokey Mountain was served notice by Federal Marshals to vacate...that they no longer owned the family home that their family had lived in for generations. They came back three times....on the third time the federal marshals burned it to the ground and with it all their clothing, food and belongings. Mr. Shaw lost 4 of his children that first winter....his wife the next winter for they had no place to go. Six months ago a 104 year old Navaho Grandmother was displaced and forced from the only home she had ever known....the only floor she had ever slept on. This is now...not in the 1830's. As we speak bills are trying to be introduced to have original allotment homes revert back to the U.S. Government once the original allottee is dead..which all are of course. This is NOW...not the 1830's.... We have been pushed....further and further...and now...I have seen the worse of mankind...I see our dead for sale. I walked on that sacred land....and saw where the logging company had bulldozed into oblivion, forever any signs of sacred medicine men...warriors...elders...babies...mothers...fathers...I walked in stunned disbelief at the carnage...I kneeled down on that ground...spreading sage and tobacco and crying...My heart could not believe this thing. I looked up at my two sisters who were staring in shock. We looked up...two sacred hawks circled us overhead...silent guardians of this place...we filmed them. I saw the Warriors wall...thousands of years old...and the graves of the warriors next to it where they had fallen in keeping vigilance to protect that land...and I saw plastic milk cartons....discarded papers...and vandalized graves. My Sister told me they had done everything they could to save it....She has given 20% of her own grocery money, literally going without food, to pay legal bills to fight in the court. The Judge told them to PROVE they were related to those buried there. PROVE IT! HOW can we PROVE IT? OF COURSE WE ARE! A Archaeologist hired by the Logging Company said that this was a grave..but those others were not...yet all were exactly the same as we walked it. I could not understand.....I could not. She said they begged to be able to at least close the graves...and were forbidden by court order to do so. I followed in silence as we filmed the scene of destruction...and she stopped and pointed to the sacred Medicine Man's grave who protected the valley of the Children. From the center of it grew..as if from his heart...a giant tree...and as I walked up...we saw the bones there...just laying there on top of the ground...and my heart sank. She showed me the altar..thousands of years old ...no one around anymore to do ceremony on it...so Creator felled a sacred cedar tree which landed exactly in the middle of the altar...as perpetual timeless sacred offering...and we filmed it. We walked around the ravines...as I stepped through the hundreds of graves...and came...into the Valley of The Children...She pointed out a felled giant tree...pulled up by its roots...as if by some unseen power, angry at the destruction of this sacred place. And then....I walked around the corner...and I saw it...the thing which broke our hearts...A tiny baby's grave....open...four of them...where vandals had dug into them....stolen the bones and artifacts...and again...she reminded me...we could not close them legally. She told me the true story of a young child who appeared there one day...and there are many stories of this happening to those who walk those grounds...The child approached a visitor and asked, "What happened to the man who planted selu (corn)?" The man who owned that particular tract of land was cherokee who would only plant corn on that section out of respect for the dead there.....and who had died. We filmed....in defiance...all of it. All of it...to show you the cruelty of man...I wanted you to see it....to understand that we are still today...dishonored. I spoke to a 95 year old woman, Omi Bradford, who every other week, of her whole life has gone to that sacred place and tried to tend the graves. She is too feeble to go anymore and I was glad for this thing...for she asked me point blank a question that broke my heart to answer..."Tell me, they have not built a road through there have they? I am so afraid they are going to do that." I got down on one knee before her...my Sisters silent...as I had to tell her, "Grandmother...they have taken bulldozers in there...and yes...they have torn up the land and made a logging road in there now." She looked into my eyes in disbelief....shaking her head...her eyes which had seen many things...filling with tears. She could not speak and I knew she was remembering almost a decade of her caretaking...which was done...for nothing. And so....we Three walked out...silently...for what was there to say? I asked one of my Sisters who had been fighting for years to save this land with her grocery money...What can we do? What can we do? She said...."They want 7 Million Dollars for this property. I spoke with the Governor of Georgia's wife....He offered $l.5 million to the Georgia State Senator who owns this and plans to put a housing addition on it. The Senator turned it down..He is asking three times what it is worth." I am struck by the thought....they are holding our dead ancestors hostage for ransom. As we begin to leave....she asks me...."Do you want to go with me tonight to Chattanooga? I just got a call about a fresh grave desecration of our People there." I tell her yes...and we agree to meet. Later...I go to her home...something has come up that she cannot make the trip tonight to Chattanooga....and I see how tired...how sick she is...how she has given everything and collapsed once from physical exhaustion. I tell her I worry for her...She replies, "I have given my heart for the People...I am prepared to give my Spirit." And then....I am given the sacred trust of telling another story....and this story is so overwhelming that I hesitated to share it with you...and do so only to let you know that there are two others in this circle...who know it...and since we are filming it....I will reveal it to you... The Hopi Sacred ones called for the 6 sacred stones to be brought to them...They retreated to prayer and to read the stones...emerged...refused to say what they had seen...and stated.."The seventh stone is not here.." For those of you who do not know of our prophecy..there are seven stones to be read to tell of what is going to happen to the world. Last night....*offers prayers here*...the stone was unwrapped and I saw it. I was allowed to film it...and have photos of it. It came from a secret location...On that location is exactly what our Cherokee Prophecy's have given...a healing spring..a altar..thousands of years old...and on the rock was written a message...we knew what it said..."Warrior (Guardian) of the Sacred Fire." We believe it to be the 7th stone. Now..what I am about to tell you will take much faith on your part...The pictures I have in my possession show a progression of red light...a fire like light coming from that stone...You can see it getting redder...and more powerful in the sequence of pictures. One of the medicine men who came and saw it...said it had sacred power. I breathed on that stone...I looked at it inches from me...felt it's power..and I say to you that in my entire life I have never seen or known anything as sacred. The location has been kept secret for untold years...no one has seen it before...and the cairns and monoliths there are incredibly powerful and sacred. It is joyous that it has remained undiscovered...for it too would have been vandalized and destroyed. The stone is kept guarded safely but I asked and received permission for Michael, who is coming to see me in June, from England to view it and inspect it. The pictures will be scanned and put up on the homepage in the next few days for I received permission to do that. What you will see then will move your heart.... We sat and spoke our hearts last night....and they cried...as we felt it hopeless to raise 7 million dollars to rescue the ancestors. I told them...There is no other choice...none...They told me that the land where the sacred spring is on is only $56,000...and I thought..it might as well be 7 million...for the number of that money struck me immediately...7...for the 7 clans. They told me the story of the White religious leaders dilemma during the imprisonment of our people during the roundup before the forced March to Oklahoma...As our People were dying...in droves...the religious leaders of the dominant culture could not decide whether to pray over our dead or not and one said, "Does a Savage Have a Soul?" I could not speak.... We hugged out Goodbyes...and I promised to return next week as they gave me all the original documents and affidavits and some video tape to study at home. I started towards Arizona...as I had wished to film the Yaqui Nation's Sundance for the Children. It was late...about 3 AM when I pulled into the first rest stop across the Alabama Border to rest for a hour...and as I slept...suddenly I was awakened...by the sound of a child crying. Another thing I hesitate to tell you. I raised up..no children were around...Dawn was breaking....I had this profound sense of sadness...of loss as I remembered yesterday.....so...I stepped out of my car as the dawn came..and knelt on the Alabama soil..and did the Morning Ceremony and offered Tobacco...as I felt tourists there were probably staring in disbelief. I asked...What do you wish me to do? What? And I knew...I had to turn around...come back...and write this story to you...so...sighs..I drove 400 miles back...to NC to a computer to write it. And each mile of the way my heart thought...of the children.... So...I stand before this council...and I now speak my heart's purpose to you..and I give you the messages of what I have learned from this Journey yesterday. I speak first to the Warriors Societies...of First Nations...I ask you this...You have been sworn by blood to protect the Old ones...the babies...the women...and I stood by your sacred Society's Warrior's wall there..and saw the graves of your Brothers who fell protecting that land...and I ask you...Does not your blood oath also bind you to protect those of our People who have gone South? Does your heart not also say to you that you cannot allow them to be stolen? To the Teachers...Have you taught your students the truth of our being sold as slaves? Of our being kidnapped? Of our people's bodies being stolen and kidnapped even in Death? Do you tell them that we are even now being held for a ransom? To the Medicine People...You know of the prophecies...You know our laws...Do you not see that our sacred oath to protect our lands are being violated? Do you sit there and your heart not speak from Spirit to do something about this thing? To the Gentle People of All Nations...Do you not see the tragedy of these acts? Are we so calloused...so desensitized that it does not matter to us anymore? Do you not understand that today it is us...tomorrow it is your culture? Would you not take our hand and help us fight this thing? It is against human rights...not just indian rights...not just the Indian First Nations People...all..ALL people.... To my First Nations Brothers and Sisters...Your hearts are on the ground...your do not see a cause in your life to fight for...You exist...merely exist...You have no fire in your hearts anymore..You do not do the old dances...You do not observe the Traditions...Why? Why? Have you so assimilated you have forgotten you are of a Honorable People? You are of FIRST NATIONS! I say to you...this humble Tsalagi Woman say...Stand up! Bring your HEARTS UP!!! Remember the words of Crazy Horse..FIGHT ON! FIGHT ON! Do not...do NOT please allow our many tribes of People to be bound to this earth because of this desecration...We need help.... To the hundreds of college students who talk to me in isca...I say to you that you have told me...most all of you there is nothing to believe in anymore. You do not see honor anymore..nor pride of a People. I say to you...Stand for this..Stand for this honor! Plant your staff deeply on this battlefield to save these thousands of graves...but more than that...to make..MAKE promises be kept...to make them Honor their Promises. Too long we have stepped further and further into the darkness...until we have been so blinded we cannot see the way anymore. We must take a stand...and say..NO MORE! NO MORE!! I do not know how....I do not know which way we can do this thing..but I say to you that I cannot stand silent in the darkness anymore and watch babies taken from graves...a people dishonored....I cannot. Each heart must speak for itself...but I know three Cherokee Women who are determined not to allow another bulldozer tear up one more grave... I know your hearts are generous...but do NOT send me money please...do not...I know others want to help...but this is not the way...We must do what is necessary and I would wish you to contribute to the fund to buy that land. Some might think there is no way we could raise $7 million. I only know that we must try. To save the land...Preservationists of Native American Sites, Inc. must be contacted. 5551 Prince Phillip Way Stone Mountain Georgia 30087 To those of you who write to me about this...please cc a copy to Gary Night Owl at gars@netcom.com I will be traveling filming a lot...and Gary is of the Warrior Society, my friend...and will help answer as will his wife Janet. For those of you who wish to fight this thing...to ask other questions please know it may take a little time but we will answer your questions. As I leave the fire...I leave with you this thought..."Do Savages have souls?" Brekah: (age 6) But...Grandmother...why did the people hug the trees as they were being forced off their lands? Grandmother: The soldiers didn't understand we were saying goodbye to our loved ones. Brekah: But..but..why didn't they just run off? Why did they stay on that march on the Trail of Tears? Grandmother: Because each night..they would run the old ones around the fires until they fell from exhaustion. They knew the younger ones would not leave the old ones there. Brekah: And they dig up our dead ancestors why? Why do they say they want to study them? Grandmother: Perhaps, Brekah, because they didn't learn the lessons well enough in the past. Brekah: *looks up* Then they will repeat them? Grandmother: *nods* Then it shall be repeated... Brekah: *softly* I think Creator will have something to say about that myself. Grandmother: So do I....so do I.... +Backs 7 steps from the fire...one for each of the sacred clans.+ Thank you for hearing my heart.... --------- "RE: Boycott Request" --------- Date: Fri, 19 Apr 1996 04:34:23 -0700 (PDT) From: cherokee@wolfenet.com Subj: Boycott Request UUCP email The name of the Georgia State Senator (who has US Senatorial aspirations) who owns the land our ancestors are buried on is: Sen. "I know this may all sound crazy to you, but we believe in the Bible," said the Rev. Chris Schauermann, pastor of Philadelphia Church in Hammond. Schauermann cites the story of King David: After years of famine, King David turned to God and asked why, and was told his ancestors had broken a treaty by warring against another community. The U.S. government signed a 1857 treaty with the Chinooks, but today does not recognize the Chinooks as an American Indian Tribe. Without that recognition, the tribe has no land claims or fishing and gambling rights, and does not receive federal money. Schauermann and his congregation believe that various economic troubles in the area may be God's way of hinting that an apology is needed. The congregation will formally ask the Chinook tribe for forgiveness during a ceremony May 25 on the Clatsop County Courthouse steps in Astoria. "We are just going to apologize for what happened to them and ask for their forgiveness," Schauermann said. The Church group also will offer its support of the Chinook's bid for federal recognition and request $3 million in restitution. Schauermann said a similar ceremony between American Indian tribes in Palm Springs, Calif., ended a high violent crime rate that he says was the result of a massacre by one tribe against the other. "That was a crime of violence. Our crime is a crime of economics. We stole something that doesn't belong to us." Feather Eaglerock, Leech Lake Rez English is a foreign language. The purpose of his mission was to request the return of a sacred bundle from a museum. Although the run was completed his first campaign to retrieve the bundle was unsuccessful. His run was documented in all the major newspapers in 1988-89. Jim Thunder is going to run again ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ During the entire course of his run he will carry an American flag to honour the native veterans, many of whom served in the great wars of this century. That flag will be carried from the Battle River to the Atlantic Ocean. The tentative schedule runs from January 4th, 1997 to May 27th 1997. His route is: North Battleford, Saskatoon, Regina, Bismarck, Minneapolis, Chicago, Cleveland, and New York. After meeting with the Museum in New York, he will run to Washington, DC, to present the flag to the American President. Volunteers are needed to organize public support, rallies, banquets, press conferences, radio and television interviews, and speaking engagements. Those who have experience in public relations, management, diplomacy, and fund raising are invited to apply. Also sales representatives, and several drivers are needed. The following letter outlines how you can help. There is also a petition (see below) which you can print out and return to the Norma Jean Croy Defense Committee. --------------------------------- Norma Jean Croy Defense Committee Pier 5 San Francisco, CA 94111 January, 1996 Dear Friends: It's been a long time since there has been anything new to tell you about Norma Jean's fight for freedom that she should never have lost so many years ago. As some of you know, the case has been in the federal district court for quite some time. There has been many back and forths between Norma Jean's lawyers and the California Attorney General's office. It is now up to the judge, who has taken the motion for an evidentiary hearing (a hearing to decide if there's enough evidence to grant a new trial) under submission (he's thinking about it). We are hoping for a decision soon. We are pretty confident that Norma Jean will be granted a hearing, and ultimately a new trial, if not outright freedom. We are very appreciative of your constant support and encouragement over the years. The letters of concern and outrage, the petitions, the money, the letters to the parole board have all been greatly appreciated. The more of us who they know are paying attention, the more pressure on them to do something to reverse the outrageous injustice that was done to Norma Jean seventeen years ago. The fight is not over until Norma Jean is out of prison, so we continue to need your support in the following ways: 1.The video "Shasta Woman" is again available. We ask for a contribution of at least $15.00 for the video. If $15.00 is more than you can do and you want the video to get the word out and/or fundraising, just let us know. 2.Getting the word out through articles, TV, radio shows, etc., is always welcome. We ask that you clear information with the defense committee before putting it out. We have received already-printed articles with misinformation, so we prefer to check things out before they go public. Thanks! 3.Money. We can always use donation to support the work we are doing and to send Norma money for commissary in prison and for quarterly packages. 4.Norma Jean is scheduled to go before the parole board, again! Letters addressed to the parole board but mailed to the defense committee would be much appreciated. At the very least it lets them know how much support Norma Jean has out here. Again, we need to keep up the pressure. Please send letters by March 1st, to NJCDC, Pier 5, San Francisco, CA 94111. 5.Keep those petitions coming in. We have enclosed one with this letter. Feel free to photocopy it and fill more than one out. Norma Jean is doing well. All the love, support and encouragement you send her way helps keep her going. This is an example of how, increasingly, our people are losing touch with the traditional principles and values that make our diverse nations unique and distinct. Is assimilation working? Please note that, to date, I've received no word from the CNAF. April 12, 1996 John Kim Bell Via fax Founder and Chair National Aboriginal Achievement Awards c/o Canadian Native Arts Foundation 77 Mowat Avenue, suite 508 Toronto, Ontario M6K 3E3 She:kon, I hope this finds you in good mind, body and spirit. This morning's Ottawa Citizen ran an article, in its Entertainment section, on your upcoming awards telecast. Accompanying the article is a photograph of Tina Keeper and Tom Jackson, this year's hosts, holding Rotinonsionni (Iroquois) medicine masks. These masks are often referred to as false-face masks. I've also been advised that the CBC has been running similar television ads and that, at one point, Mr. Jackson covers his face with the mask he is holding. As a Kanienkehaka artist, you must surely be aware of the deep spiritual significance, and great power, of these sacred medicine masks to our people. You must also be aware that there is only one truly respectful use for these masks -- that being for the medicinal ceremonies -- as described in our Creation Stories. The power of these masks are not to be trifled with. There are many of our people who use them disrespectfully and the consequences of such misuse will be theirs to bear. In its Spring 1995 issue (Vol. #1), the Akwesasne Notes published the Rotinonsionni (Iroquois Confederacy) policy statement concerning the appropriate, and inappropriate, use of these sacred masks. I am including the text of that policy with this letter. I urge you, your hosts, and any personnel who may be involved in this ad campaign, to read it carefully. I am supportive of our people achieving success in their chosen careers and such achievements should be acknowledged and celebrated. I'm not certain, however, that the format you've chosen best reflects the traditional principles and values of our diverse indigenous cultures. Surely you will agree that your organization should not conduct itself in a manner that trivializes and exploits our spirituality. Cultural appropriation is a serious issue that our peoples have been trying to correct for generations and your use of our masks is inappropriate. I am willing to give Ms. Keeper and Mr. Jackson the benefit of the doubt in this matter. They are not of our culture and perhaps they participated in this publicity stunt without knowing the full extent of its sacrilegious nature. As role models, I hope they will be more careful in the future. I feel a public apology, during your telecast this Sunday, is in order. I also suggest the N.A.A.A. adopt a rigid policy to ensure that respect for peoples' cultures be given the highest priority. All indigenous nations have sacred societies and objects that must be respected. I encourage your organization, in preparing its future awards programs, to conduct detailed research in order to avoid this sort of thing from happening again. Nia:wen Kanatiio cc Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs Grand Council of the Rotinonsionni Akwesasne Notes Aboriginal Voices The Ottawa Citizen Attachment HAUDENOSAUNEE CONFEDERACY ANNOUNCES POLICY ON FALSE FACE MASKS The Grand Council of the Haudenosaunee, The Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy, issues the following policy statement regarding all medicine masks of the Haudenosaunee: Medicine Societies Within the Haudenosaunee there are various medicine societies that have the sacred duty to maintain the use and strength of special medicines, both for individual and community welfare. A medicine society is comprised of Haudenosaunee who have partaken of the medicine and are thereby bound to the protection and perpetuation of tile special medicines. Such medicines are essential to the spiritual and emotional well-being of the Haudenosaunee communities. The medicine societies are a united group of individuals who must uphold and preserve the rituals that guard and protect the people, and the future generations. Among these medicine societies are those that utilize the wooden masks and corn husk masks, which represent the shared power of the original medicine beings. Although there are variations of their images, all the masks have power and an intended purpose that is solely for the members of the respective medicine societies. Interference with the sacred duties of the societies and/or their masks is a violation of the freedom of the Haudenosaunee and does great harm to the welfare of the Haudenosaunee communities. Status of Masks All wooden and corn husk masks of the Haudenosaunee are sacred, regardless of size or age. By their very nature, masks are empowered the moment they are made. The image of the mask is sacred and is only to be used for its intended purpose. Masks do not have to he put through any ceremony or have tobacco attached to them in order to become useful or powerful. Masks should not be made unless they are to he used by members of the medicine society, according to established tradition. Sales of Masks No masks can be made for commercial purposes. Individuals who make masks for sale or sell masks to non-Indians violate the intended use of the masks, and such individuals must cease these activities as they do great harm to the Haudenosaunee. The commercialization of medicine masks is an exploitation of Haudenosaunee culture. Authority over Medicine Masks Each Haudenosaunee reservation has a medicine mask society that has authority over the use of masks for individual and community needs. Each society is charged with the protection of their sacred masks and the assurance of their proper use. The Grand Council of Chiefs has authority over all medicine societies and shall appoint individual leaders or medicine societies as necessary. However, no individual can speak or make decisions for medicine societies or the displacement of medicine masks. No institution has the authority over medicine masks, as they are the sole responsibility of the medicine societies and the Grand Council of Chiefs. Exhibition of Medicine Masks The public exhibition of all medicine masks is forbidden. Medicine masks are not intended for everyone to see and such exhibition does not recognize the sacred duties and special functions of the masks. The exhibition of masks by museums does not serve to enlighten the public regarding the culture of the Haudenosaunee as such an exhibition violates the intended purpose of the mask and contributes to the desecration of the sacred image. In addition, information regarding medicine societies is not meant for general distribution. The non-Indian public does not have the right to examine, interpret, or present the beliefs, functions, and duties of the secret medicine societies of the Haudenosaunee. The sovereign responsibility of the Haudenosaunee over their spiritual duties must be respected by the removal of all medicine masks from exhibition and from access to non-Indians. Reproductions, castings, photographs, or illustrations of medicine masks should not he used in exhibitions, as the image of the medicine masks should not be used in these fashions. To subject tile image of the medicine masks to ridicule or misrepresentation is a violation of the sacred functions of the masks. The Council of Chiefs find that there is no proper way to explain, interpret, or present the significance of the medicine masks and therefore, ask that no attempt be made by museums to do so other than to explain the wishes of the Haudenosaunee in this matter. Return of Medicine Masks All Haudenosaunee medicine masks currently possessed by non-Indians, including Museums, Art Galleries, Historical Societies, Universities, Commercial Enterprises, Foreign Governments, and Individuals should be returned to the Grand Council of Chiefs of the Haudenosaunee, who will ensure their proper use and protection for the future generations. There is no legal, moral, or ethical way in which a medicine mask can be obtained or possessed by a non-Indian individual or institution, as in order for a medicine mask to be removed from the society it would require the sanction of the Grand Council of Chiefs. This sanction has never been given. We ask all people to cooperate in the restoration of masks and other sacred objects to the proper caretakers among the Haudenosaunee. It is only through these actions that the traditional culture will remain strong and peace will be restored to our communities. Dawnaytoh, Chief Leon Shenandoah, Tadadaho Grand Council of the Haudenosaunee -- Reprinted with permission April 18, 1996 The Editor The Globe and Mail She:kon (Greetings), This is in reference to an article which appeared in your April 17, 1996 issue, under the headline, "Awards show draws complaints." It is disappointing to see that John Kim Bell continues to justify his use of our sacred masks in this year's National Aboriginal Achievement Awards. I wrote to Mr. Bell, on Friday April 12, 1996, to raise my concerns over this matter. I included a copy of the Haudenosaunee policy statement on False Face Masks. Surely he's seen it by now. The policy clearly states that, "All wooden and corn husk masks of the Haudenosaunee are sacred, regardless of size or age [and they] should not be made unless they are to be used by members of the medicine society, according to established tradition." Mr. Bell is right when he says our people should not be selling or making replicas. But he shouldn't be condoning their inappropriate use either. He said, "[i]t was not our intent to offend anyone." CBC spokesperson Tom Curzon also said, "there was certainly no intent to be disrespectful and we don't define them as religious masks." Well, the official custodians of our medicine societies have defined the appropriate, and inappropriate, use of these masks. I support anyone's efforts to counter negative media coverage, which tends to be stereotypical, superficial and often disrespectful, in its portrayal of indigenous peoples. But, in this case, both organizations have succeeded in being disrespectful and offensive. The Canadian Native Arts Foundation has insulted the Haudenosaunee. If those accepting the responsibilities and privileges of being Aboriginal role models don't show proper respect to our cultures and identities, how can they expect others to do so? The CBC has done a disservice to its viewers, and it has failed in its public education mandate. Rather than defend their actions, both organizations should apologize and ensure this does not happen again. Nia:wen Kanatiio (Allen Gabriel) --------- "RE: Book: After Wounded Knee" --------- Date: 18 Apr 1996 12:45:15 GMT From: ggg9@ix.netcom.com(Gerald Green) Subj: NEW BOOK:: AFTER WOUNDED KNEE Newsgroups: soc.culture.native.american "After Wounded Knee: Correspondence of Major and Surgeon John Vance Lauderdale While Serving with the Army Occupying the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, 1890-1891." The Wounded Knee Massacre of December 29, 1890, known to U.S. military historians as the last battle in "the Indian Wars," was in reality another tragic event in a larger pattern of conquest, destruction, killing, and broken promises that continues to characterize U.S. policy toward Native Americans. Arriving to take up duties at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota only days after this encounter between the Seventh Cavalry and Lakota civilians, in which more than 260 Lakota men, women, and children were killed, Army Surgeon John Vance Lauderdale wrote a series of extended letters to his wife describing what happened. This body of correspondence contains details of daily life on the Pine Ridge Reservation under military occupation. He also shares his views on the Wounded Knee massacre itself and on other tragic events, such as the cold-blooded murders of Few Tails and Lt. Casey. Lauderdale treated the wounded, both Seventh Cavalry soldiers and Lakota civilians. He had little sympathy for the military command and expressed outrage at the tactics used against the Lakota, who he saw as being goaded into a situation by white ranchers, land speculators, government agents, and the U.S. Army. After Wounded Knee contains letters that are part of the John Vance Lauderdale Papers in the Western American Collection in Yale University's Beinecke Library. It is a "must read" title for anyone interested in what happened to a Lakota remnant on a cold winter's morning more than a century ago. The book is available from the Michigan State University Press. --------- "RE: Gas Tax on OK Tribes" --------- Date: Thu, 18 Apr 1996 10:57:04 -0500 From: berryj@Okway.okstate.edu (John Berry) Subj: Gas Tax on OK Tribes - news UUCP email State Senate Supports Tribes April 17th, 1996 Oklahoma City; The Oklahoma State Senate passed a bill agreeing with the concept of compacts with the Tribes on fuel sales tax from Indian owned stations. The Oklahoma State House will likely block this bill. State Rep. Howard Cotner, Democrat said, "It doesn't mean anything." and "I certainly have no intention of considering the (Senate) bill that passed today." His plan puts the burden of the fuel tax from the retail level to the wholesale level and makes provision for Indians to apply to the State for rebates from taxes paid on fuel purchases. State Senator Jerry Price, Republican, from Bartlesville, accused State Senate Democrats of selling out to Indian tribes by supporting the bill in the Oklahoma State Senate. He went on to question the concept of self- government recognized in U.S. Treaties with the Tribes. The situation still appears to be un-resolved and will likely generate legal challenges from the Tribes. ===================================================================== John Berry --------- "RE: Poem: Spirit" --------- From: Lightbear@aol.com(Lightbear/Christiana V.L. Mailing List: NATIVE-L (native-l@gnosys.svle.ma.us) Last night, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (C.B.C.) ran a news story on the Assembly of First Nation's (A.F.N.) Confederacy of Nations meeting being held here in Ottawa. The story featured a segment where Ovide Mercredi, National Chief, was on the phone with someone at the Prime Minister's Office (P.M.O.), asking if "Canada's Aboriginal leaders" are going to be included in the upcoming First Minister's Conference. He was apparently told no. Ovide told the elected chiefs that discussions on Canadian unity must include his people. So, who does Ovide represent? He claims to represent all status Indians in Canada. But how does he get to be National Chief? The National Chief is chosen through a "democratic", Canadian-style election, which is held every two years. Who elects the National Chief? Only representatives of Canada's band councils can participate in the A.F.N.'s voting process. The band council system is a creation of the Canadian government imposed on our people, sometimes violently, as part of Canada's campaign to assimilate us. Band councils are part of the Canadian government's administrative and political structure. In fact, they are on the bottom rung of the Canadian ladder. In our experience, the Canadian concept of democracy is an exercise in dividing, not uniting, the people. Elections, confrontational in nature as they are, are not the best method of ensuring strength of unity when it counts. This is why the A.F.N. is always divided, always bickering. I always find it interesting to hear today's "Aboriginal leaders" talk about their identity. They say they are fighting for the recognition of our nationhood. At the same time, however, they say they want to remain a part of Canada. Well, you can't have it both ways. If you believe you're Canadian, or that's what you're striving for, then you surrender your nationhood and you assimilate into Canada's socio-political structure. You become another ethnic component of Canada's melting pot. Your place in the Kaswentah (Two Row Wampum) is clear and set. You shut up and take all that side has to "offer". If, however, you truly believe that you are a citizen of your particular nation, you should focus all your energy and power in rebuilding that nation and having it recognized, on the same basis as any other nation in the world. Representation in the A.F.N. consists of a "National Chief" and "Regional Chiefs" from the provinces. As such, its structure reflects that of Canada, and not that of the indigenous nations in this part of Mother Earth. This sets up a weird situation in terms of representation where one nation may be represented by more than one elected representative (if that indigenous nation falls within the territories of more than one artificial region, also known as provinces). This is the case where the Ojibway, Cree, Mohawks, and others are concerned). This means that the A.F.N., by its very nature, adopts the pan-Aboriginal approach created by its political master, the government of Canada. This propagates the myth that all indigenous peoples are the same. Ever since he was elected "National Chief", Ovide has been fighting for Constitutional recognition of Aboriginal governments as a "third order of government, within Canada". But which government? As far as I know, none of the traditional governments of any of our nations, such as the Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs are affiliated with the A.F.N. Does Ovide really represent all "status Indians" in Canada. No. He represents some, but not all, band council chiefs. If the A.F.N. is to survive and play any significant, and useful, role in the attainment of our goals as indigenous peoples, it will need a major re-structuring. No one man can speak on behalf of all the indigenous nations in this part of Turtle Island. That is our way. Besides, how effective a lobbyist can Ovide be when Canada provides his funding? We all saw how easy it was for Ron Irwin to freeze him out of his discussions with local "leaders". No, things have to change if progress is to be made. So, "national leaders", you have a conscious choice to make. Are you Canadian or are you a citizen of your own nation? Remember, the Creator put all the nations here on Mother Earth. Who are you to undermine that? Elijah Harper recently said that God is an Indian and that he wants unity for all Canadians. I think the Creator would like to see justice done. I think the Creator would like to see us respect one another, as equals. I think the Creator would like us to incorporate the teachings of Creation into the moral fabric of ourselves and our societies. As the indigenous peoples of Turtle Island, our rightful place within the Circle of Life is, at the very least, equal to that of Canada, the United States, or any other people. It is legitimate for us to live in accordance with our own laws, ceremonies and values. No other people or nation has the moral right to subjugate us. Is peace and harmony a magical thing? Do we need to travel to India to find the answers? Do the answers lie in complex political science theories? No. The simple truth is that there exists a great diversity within the Circle of Life, and that diversity exists for a reason. Each element of Creation has the equal right to exist. Otherwise, it would not exist in the first place. Each element of Creation is vital to the existence of all the others. We are all inextricably linked. The fundamental basis for success in achieving peace and harmony is basic respect, for one another and for all elements of Creation. Here in Canada, those simple principles are not understood. I often hear Canadians who decry the fact that they are being held accountable for the crimes of their ancestors. "We can't be blamed for what was done in the past. We can't change history," they lament. Well, I'd buy that argument if they were trying to do something about it. But the crimes continue, even today. Canada's stated policy objective of assimilation is alive and well, only we don't call it that anymore. The new buzz word is "partnership." Call it what you like, the end result for our people is the same -- assimilation. You have but to read the Nunavut agreement, the Nisga'a Agreement-in-Principle, and the Manitoba devolution initiative to see that. The leaders say these agreements are "good business". I don't know much about business but, I wonder what their grandchildren will think when they discover that they were sold out. I think these "leaders" believe they're getting the best deal they can given Canada's track record. The Canadian government steadfastly refuses to recognize the fact that we, as the indigenous peoples of Turtle Island, are the legitimate title holders of the lands it claims as its own. The Canadian government also refuses to recognize our traditional governments, preferring to deal with its band councils, which it funds. The Canadian government continues, in the name of all its citizens, to perpetrate crimes against us. I know some Canadians oppose this and try to do something about it. But to those who do and say nothing, I say silence is collusion. So, yes indeed, you can be held accountable for the wrongs of the past, because you allow them to continue. Is there a way out of this dilemma? Is there a path to peaceful co-existence? Of course. But that path involves justice, a willingness to listen with respect and acceptance that "Made in Canada" is not the only choice. --------- "RE: Racist Radio Broadcast in Oklahoma" --------- Date: Thu, 18 Apr 1996 12:06:16 -0700 From: thompson@mind.net (Joseph Thompson) Subj: Racist Radio Broadcast in Oklahoma Mailing List: NATIVE-L (native-l@gnosys.svle.ma.us) The following news release is posted at the request of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. News Release 04-15-96 (Concho, Oklahoma)-Norman radio station KRXO-FM today failed to produce tapes of a talk show last week containing quotes attributed to Gov. Frank Keating degrading American Indians during the rally Wednesday at Lloyd Noble Center at Norman. Talk show host Mark Shannon intimated that the governor, in a conversation with Shannon, referred to the protesters with a term that Shannon characterized as "trash", ostensibly to avoid using a harsher term that, he inferred, the governor had used. Tyler Todd, chairman of Indian Citizens Empowerment Political Action Committee (ICE-PAC), said Shannon called his office Monday morning and gave several excuses why the tape was unavailable. First, Shannon stated that the timing clocks had not been changed and a time period on the tapes had not been recorded; and secondly, Thursday's tapes had been recorded over on Friday and no such tape now existed, Todd said. Rick Buchanan, press officer to the governor, Friday, at about 4:10 pm, called and apologized and denied the remarks attributed to Gov. Keating. Buchanan said the governor would not try to deceive people, and honored the people of Oklahoma. Buchanan said he would guarantee that Keating would not say a thing like that (the remark characterizing the protesters as "trash") and that the tape of the show did not contain the remark. However, when questioned by Todd, Buchanan said he did not listen to the tape and did not know if it was available. Shortly after, at approximately 4:20 p.m., Shannon called Todd and said he did not make those remarks credited to Keating. When asked if the tape of the show could be obtained, Shannon quipped that if such a tape existed, it could only be obtained with a "subpoena" and he would crucify the American Indian protesters on his talk show on Monday morning. Todd responded that neither a subpoena nor the tape were need as the earlier news release containing all the quotes would stand. He said ICE-PAC would keep the news release as is since Shannon would not produce the tape if such a tape existed. Shannon said he would try to find the tape. Shannon called back at about 4:35 p.m and said the producer was going to the station to hunt the tape and would have a hook up before 5 p.m. Shannon, with a hook up that included the governor's office, called at 6:15 p.m. and played a portion of a tape, but only in regards to Newt Gingrich and J. C. Watts. H offered to provide the comments by Monday, but not the whole tape. "As far as we are concerned, since the tapes are unavailable," Todd said, "the quotes Mr. Shannon made over the air on the "Shannon and Spinozzi Show" attributed to Gov. Keating are correct. The parties involved can make all the denials they want, but what was heard by listeners is what we stand by." Also, Shannon referred to the protesters at various times using the terms "slime balls", "winos", "earth dogs" and other derogatory nouns. We will pursue these "racist" and "derogatory" remarks by KRXO-FM and the governor to the Federal Communications Commission and the people of Oklahoma," Todd concluded. During the years when I was growing up, my mother weaved rugs to help the family to buy food at the nearby trading post. My mother also taught me how to weave rugs, and to make baskets from willows. Through out the years my mother still does this things to help herself along. Along the way the rugs that she made were not considered to be art. It was a necessity for living day to day . As it is still now for her. As she became know, her work turned into an art form, as other people defined it. Her patterns have changed very little over the past 40 some odd years. Some of these patterns have been handed down generation after generation and have remained in our family. I then got married into a family of artists, (jewelry, moccasins, leatherwork, beadwork, dancing outfits, etc.). I also got involved in making things of beads and leather, and learned how to make knives and handles out of deer antler. For me this is not an art form, this is something I wanted to learn. I do not make a living , most of the things I gave away to friends and relatives. In return the things I have received has been ten fold and proudly display on my living room wall and through out the house. I look at these things I have acquired and am always looking at these paintings, wall hangings, purses ect.. everyday. It reminds me constantly of who I am and where I come from. When I try to be somebody I am not , I jerk myself back an see what I am becoming. After all I am growing up in a CAPITALISTIC society. I believe, as Americans and individuals, we want things which are authentic, FOR DO WE WANT ITEMS MADE IN JAPAN AND LABEL THEM (AMERICAN MADE OR MADE BY INDIANS). I think not. The Navajo reservation is fighting to prevent the non-Indians from flooding the market with FAKE INDIAN JEWELRY. All in the name of GREED. If the INDIAN people were to give away there or lifestyles , what are we then, Soon our children will never know who they are. My grandfather use to say" THERE WILL BECOME A TIME WHEN WE WILL BE ALL SPEAKING THE SAME LANGUAGE, WHEN WE FORGET TO SPEAK OUR OWN LANGUAGE , WE WILL BE NO MORE. OUR CHILDREN WILL SAY WHO AM I?." As for the Navajo Indians when we greet each other by what clan we are. Then the greeting become formal. We see if we are related, If we might be brothers , we greet as such. In my travels I have been fortunate to meet many people of different cultures. Yet have I to meet a non-Indian who says "Hi , What clan are you, lets see if we are brothers or sisters". But as always when I meet a Navajo Its Hi!. What clan are you?. Lets see if we are related. When I meet other tribes we greet as BROTHERS AND SISTERS . One of very first things that I repeated time after time is" Are you hungry or Have you eaten yet?. or yet come into my home an sit down and rest before you go on with your trip or sleep an rest for the night. I believe these are a couple of the many items that separate the non-Indian from the Indian(or indigenous people). Unfortunately, it doesn't end there... While Second Chance, with the help of the Sisters, has apparently located several other sites for the location of a youth offender boot camp, the Sisters maintain that the land is still for sale. Two other groups -- Centralia Community College, and the citizens of Toledo -- have expressed interest in purchasing the land for their own construction. The up side? Neither group has the money to but the land. The down? Even after explaining our side (and my saying that I will protect the land at all cost), the general public does not understand it is wrong to violate the graves -- it's being called "cultural significance," as if Indians are the only people who do not wish to see the bodies of their relatives exhumed or broken and torn to bits. I don't like to use the term "stupid," but it certainly fits, and like a glove. We are waiting for certain conditions to improve, and when they do we will be meeting with T.Murphy, Archdiocese of Seattle. It will be our position that we wish the land returned to the Cowlitz people. We are currently composing a plan showing what we are willing to do with the land, that we have definite ideas about what we want. It looks as if I will lose. Mine is the only voice saying nothing should be done, that the (non-historical) buildings should be dismantled, the land cared for rather than molded. Everyone else on the Tribal Council has ideas about what could be erected, from food banks to museums (no casinos, thankfully). Our entire argument was based on those graves, and while I have successfully lobbied that the first course of action should be to find exactly where those graves are, I can't help but feel sad at the thought of having to see more ugly buildings on that land. Also, I attended a university workshop which focused on this topic for Chicano women within the last two years. Native American women are disinclined to participate in community projects which are consciously and unconsciously designed to exclude them because 1. There are no Native American staff present (which suggests Native Americans only exist in to-be-helped capacities); 2. Through racist code signals, body language, and words, Native American women and children are treated in racist ways by staff and/or white clients; 3. Staff and/or clients invade private space, inquiring about what it means to be Native American, etc., and clients feel people want them to reveal "secrets" in trade for assistance, and/or they are tired of answering white questions about Native America; 4. White middle class values are used to judge Native American lives and counsel them; 5. Staff are unaware of basic facts about Native America; 6. There is no recognition of Native America in office, general living, or individual rooms (wall hangings, newspapers, etc.). Your addressing these issues as appropriate and your positive presence in the shelter will bring about a willingness within the community to use it.
